FMB demands housing strategy

Government announcement to tackle fuel poverty and improve energy efficiency is right in principle but wrong in delivery, says the Federation of Master Builders (FMB).

Once again, the Federation calls for a cut in VAT on repairs and maintenance work as an option to imptove the energy efficienty of homes.

Brian Berry, Director of External Affairs at the FMB said: ‘What is needed is a comprehensive, coherent strategy to make all, not just some, of the UK’s homes more energy efficient.

‘If the Government is to have any real chance of cutting fuel poverty and achieving its aim of reducing carbon emissions 500,000 homes would need to be refurbished every year between now and 2050.

Berry continued: ‘Cutting the VAT from 17.5% to 5% on all repair and maintenance work would be a more sustainable, long term option to improve the energy efficiency of our housing stock. Coupled with this, the Government should consider reducing council tax to help householders wanting to make their homes more energy efficient.

‘Independent research from Oxford University calculates that there is a potential market of between £3.5billion and £6.5billion per annum for the home refurbishment market. This is good news not only for the building industry but for all those who want a warmer, more energy efficient home.’
